What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments/Reviews

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

If you contact us via forms on our website, we receive only the information you provide in the form. This information is kept indefinitely in our email. We do not use this information for marketing.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you are on the checkout page and do not complete your purchase, we collect your email and a cookie is created that recalls what was in your cart. This enables us to send you an email related to that unfinished purchase. You can opt out of those emails by an unsubscribe link at the bottom. Your information is kept for 2 years to enable us to better understand which products are being abandoned.

Purchase/Visitor data

While you visit our site, we’ll track:

  • Products you’ve viewed: we’ll use this to, for example, show you products you’ve recently viewed
  • Location, IP address and browser type: we’ll use this for purposes like estimating taxes and shipping
  • Shipping address: we’ll ask you to enter this so we can, for instance, estimate shipping before you place an order, and send you the order!

We’ll also use cookies to keep track of cart contents while you’re browsing our site.

When you purchase from us, we’ll ask you to provide information including your name, billing address, shipping address, email address, phone number, credit card/payment details and optional account information like username and password. We’ll use this information for to:

For example, we will store order information for 7 years for tax and accounting purposes. This includes your name, email address and billing and shipping addresses.

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

Analytics

Google Analytics collects first-party cookies, data related to the device/browser, anonymized IP address and on-site activities to measure and report statistics about user interactions on Northanger Soapworks. No personally identifiable information is collected. Google Analytics uses IP addresses to derive the geolocation of a visitor, and to protect the service and provide security. Our website also uses Facebook Pixel for analytics for users who have granted consent. If you are logged onto facebook your activity on our website will be collected by Facebook. We use facebook pixel in order to learn who is interested in our products for advertising purposes. Facebook Social Login

We collect your public profile data only from your consent that you grant before initiating Social Login, from the facebook account used to login at our website. This data includes your first name, last name, email address, link to your social media profile, unique identifier, social profile avatar. This data is used to create your user profile at our website. You can revoke this consent at any time by sending us an email.

Who we share your data with

We use a Twitter Tweet widget on our website. As a result, our website makes requests to Twitter’s servers for you to be able to tweet our webpages using your Twitter account. These requests make your IP address visible to Twitter, who may use it in accordance with their data privacy policy: https://twitter.com/en/privacy#update

We use Stripe as a payment processor for credit and debit cards. We keep records on our servers of your purchase indefinitely in order to give better service for future orders (which includes all information entered on the checkout page except for credit/debit card numbers). Stripe receives all this information as well as your credit/debit card number in order to process payments. We have an anti-spam checker called anti-spam bee that is GDPR compliant. It looks at your IP address and comments in a compliant manner.

We use mailchimp to handle our newsletter subscriptions. In the subscription process they collect your name, email address, and IP address for geolocating. By subscribing you are granting consent for us to send you advertising emails based on your location, what you’ve shown an interest in or buy from us.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

The limited data shared with Google Analytics is retained for 26 months.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
