Bar Soap
How long will my bar soap last?
With average daily use in the shower (by one person), one bar should last 3-4 weeks. Our bar soap will last longer if care is taken that the soap can dry between uses. This is most easily accomplished by using a draining soap dish.
Can I use bar soap on my body or is it only for hands?
It is meant for full body use, with the exception of your hair.
Can I use soap to wash my hair?
We do not recommend it.
I don’t want to use my soap right away, I want to save it because it is so pretty.
If you are squirreling away soap in your sock drawer, please bear in mind that the fragrance may weaken with time (especially herbal and citrus scents) and we recommend using bar soap within one year of purchase for an optimal experience. Take care to store it in a dry environment or it could develop yellow rancid spots over time.
Is your soap all natural?
Every bar is at least 95% natural, but the last 5 percent may contain color or fragrance that is man-made (but make our soap look and smell amazing!) However, we try to keep a bar or two of 100% all natural soap on hand! Look for it here. Soap made with natural fragrance is here.
Is your soap vegetarian?
No. We use lard in our bar soap for multiple reasons as listed below.
- The first reason is that soap made with lard is historically accurate to the era Jane Austen lived in. Both tallow and lard have been traditionally used in soapmaking for centuries.
- Second, Jane Austen’s father raised pigs and if felt very appropriate to our Jane Austen brand.
- Third, lard makes an extremely gentle and long lasting soap due to its hardness. We prefer lard soap to any other type because it results in such a quality bar.
- And finally, we use lard because it is a sustainable alternative to palm oil. A hard fat (such as lard, tallow, or palm) is an important ingredient in soapmaking so that the resulting bar is hard. But as palm oil is often unsustainably sourced, we choose not to use it due to the environmental concerns. The way we look at it, lard is abundantly available as it is a waste product of the pork industry. In using it, we believe we are reducing waste and making the most of the animal by using its fat to create something useful.
Bar soap is the only product we make that contains lard. Our candles and bath salts are vegan. Our scented tablets and lip balm are considered vegetarian due to their beeswax content.
What colors do you use in your soap?
We use a variety of FDA approved color powders, such as mica and iron oxide, as well as 100% natural colors such as indigo powder, paprika, walnut hull powder, etc. Though for simplicity, we may not list the exact color used in the ingredients list, and summarize it as “colorant.”
Candles
How do I take care of my candle?
Burn your candle for 2-3 hours at a time. Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before each burn to prevent wick mushrooming and to keep a moderate sized flame. Do not move your candle after burning unless wax has cooled. Burn candle on a level, heat-resistant surface. Excessive burn times may cause the candle to overheat and shorten its life, and may also be a fire hazard.
How long will my candle last?
Our candles are approximately 5.5 oz and should last a minimum of 30 hours with proper usage.
